HIGHLAND | Highland police arrested 27 people early Saturday after breaking up a large party with minors drinking and using drugs, authorities said.
Officers were called just after 1 a.m. Saturday to a home in the 3600 block of 38th Street on a tip of an underage drinking party there, according to a news release issued Tuesday by Highland police. When officers arrived, they found 40 to 45 people inside, smelled a strong odor of marijuana and saw a large amount of alcohol inside, police said.
The people inside would not answer or open the doors, the release stated. Highland police contacted the homeowner, who was not home at the time, and worked with her to get her daughter to open the door for officers.
Highland police called for assistance from Griffith police and began obtaining a search warrant to enter the home, according to the release.
Some of the young people inside chose to leave on their own, but the doors were quickly shut behind them, police said.
Those still inside eventually opened doors for police as the search warrant was being sought. One person inside allegedly made an obscene finger gesture to police and argued with them before being handcuffed and charged with disorderly conduct, police said.
Once inside, police arrested 27 people on charges ranging from illegal use of alcohol, disorderly conduct and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
One girl was found passed out and heavily intoxicated in a bedroom of the home. She was taken by ambulance to Community Hospital in Munster for treatment, police said.
"This is the first such incident this year and hopefully the last," Cmdr. George Georgeff, spokesman for the Highland Police Department, said in the statement. "We would like to assure our residents that the Highland Police Department will continue to exercise a zero tolerance policy when it comes to illegal use of alcohol/drugs."
