HIGHLAND | A fire gutted a home on Highway Avenue on Thursday afternoon, sending a couple to the hospital.

Highland Fire Chief Bill Timmer said firefighters were on the scene a few minutes after neighbors reported the fire at 12:49 p.m.

Timmer said flames were visible on the roof of the home, 3105 Highway Ave., near Main Square Park.

Mary Leep said she has been neighbors with the homeowners, Douglas and Lorraine Shelbourne, for about 30 years. Leep said Douglas Shelbourne alerted her family to the fire and asked them to call 911. Leep said he appeared to have injuries to his leg and wrists.

Leep, who was in contact with the couple and their relatives during the fire, said they were transported to a local hospital. Timmer could not confirm the identity of the residents or their injuries.

Timmer said the fire gutted the house and reached all three levels of the home. Firefighters from Schererville, Griffith and Munster got the fire under control by 2:30 p.m. Timmer said the cause is being investigated.

Leep said the Shelbournes' dog, Lucy, was in the yard when the fire started and was immediately rescued. The couple's cat wasn't rescued until several minutes after the fire had started and was taken to an animal hospital by Leep's daughter Emily Leep.
