Jessica Carrothers, of Highland, placed third in the Girls 10-11 Years Division during third-round competition in the Indiana Elks Hoop Shoot free throw contest held at New Castle last month. Carrothers was sponsored by Highland Elks Lodge 981.
The Elks Hoop Shoot began as a local program by the Corvallis, Ore. Elks in 1946, and is in its 42th year of national competition, with more than three million U.S. youngsters participating in local, district, state and regional contests.
With regionals having been completed last weekend, 48 boys and girls 8 to 13 will compete April 12 in Springfield, Mass. for national honors in each age category, ages 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. Indiana;'s lone national finalist is Drew Cook, representing Brazil Lodge 762 in the Boys Ages 8-9 category.
This project is supported by the interest earned on donations made through the Elks National Foundation, which provides scholarships and grants to outstanding young students.
