HIGHLAND | The Town Council on Monday approved an agreement that expands the number of communities the Fire Department can contact for assistance with additional firefighters and equipment.
The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System allows the department to seek assistance, if needed, beyond the current boundary of Lake County, Highland Fire Chief Bill Timmer said.
The system allows his department to seek help across state lines, including Illinois.
"It just ensures us of more help if we need it," he said.
The system also would allow another department to operate on standby in case the Highland department is engaged with a current emergency, Timmer said.
The town should be up and running under the new system within the next couple of weeks, Timmer said.
In other business, the county approved a 25 cent per hour raise for the town's "paid on demand" firefighters.
"It's long overdue," said Council Vice President Bernie Zemen, D-1st.
