HIGHLAND | Dan Dempsey, of Highland, held his second annual "No One Fights Alone" Toy Drive during December, with drop off locations throughout Northwest Indiana and the Illinois south suburbs. The items collected during the drive go to children who are battling cancer.
Last year, donations went to children undergoing treatment at Advocate Hope Children's Hospital in Oak Lawn, Ill. where Dempsey's son had undergone treatment for leukemia.
Dempsey, who is a Riverdale police officer, had seen how getting to pick out a new toy helped brighten the children's day and decided to take donations to fill the toy room at the hospital. This year, donations will again go the Advocate Hope Children's Hospital in Oak Lawn, and also to the Northwest Indiana Cancer Kids Foundation in Highland.
With at least 10 participating drop-off locations, 1,500 toys and $4,000 in gift cards were donated. Nortek Environmental in Naperville also pledged to donate $1 for each new "like" on the company's Facebook page.
In addition to toys and gift cards for toys, donations this year included gift cards for gas stations to help parents with the cost of transporting children for treatment.
