HIGHLAND | Sponsors of private events where a police presence is requested or required will now have to pay a fee for that service.

The new law, adopted by the Town Council last week, does not apply to town-sponsored events.

The law, requested by Police Chief Peter Hojnicki, requires a minimum fee of $250 for private events, depending on its variety.

"We're just trying to recover the money" spent by taxpayers to accommodate these events, Deputy Chief Pat Vassar said.

Hojnicki said a combination of police officers and Volunteers in Police Services personnel often provide security or direction for private parades, athletic running events, walk-a-thons and other activities.

"We've been paying for it all" up until now, Hojnicki said.
