HIGHLAND | Highland has signed an agreement extending its garbage collection contract with Republic Services Inc.
The company originally signed with the town in 2010.
Republic had the winning bid of $12.98 per month per household, Public Works Director John Bach said.
Although that figure is $3 less than the current contract, it will be up to the Sanitary Board to determine if and how this might affect residential bills, Bach said.
The new agreement is expected to take effect around May 1, after the company has delivered new garbage containers to homeowners.
The blue plastic cans are 95 gallons and hold about three times the amount of a regular can, Bach said. The new cans are designed for automatic unloading by the garbage truck operators.
Each house will get two cans: one for garbage and one for recycling, Bach said. The garbage cans will have different colored lids to distinguish them.
"It'll be cleaner for the community," Bach said, "and less stressful for the workers."
Recycling pickups for each house will be every two weeks because the cans are so large, Bach said. Half the town will be collected each week.
Bach also said Republic will pay for repairs or replacement of the new cans in the future. He said older residents, who have less garbage, can request smaller cans if desired.
Bach said two seminars have been scheduled to tell residents more about the new program. Those sessions are at 2 and 6 p.m. March 20 at Lincoln Center.
In other business, the council approved letters of commendation for two police officers.
Cpl. Glen Cox was honored for his work in running the Volunteers in Police Services program. Sgt. Michael O'Donnell was recognized for reporting for duty without missing a day during the past 25 years.
