HIGHLAND | The longtime superintendent of the School Town of Highland announced his retirement Tuesday.
Michael Boskovich, 62, who has been with the school district 40 years, will retire June 30.
With a catch in his voice every now and then as he read from a prepared statement, Boskovich thanked the board members for their encouragement and support, and every teacher and support staff member for the district's success.
"I admire your courage," Boskovich said to the Board of Trustees. "Thanks to the teachers and the support staff. Thanks to Lucy Lobodzinski, a true colleague, confidant and friend. I will cherish all of you."
All of the board members paid homage to Boskovich for his years in the district and his success. Longtime school board member Larry Vassar, who was succeeded as president by Luanne Jurczak, told Boskovich, "I understand but I hate to see this. You know every nook and cranny of this school corporation."
Board member Carol Green-Fraley commended Boskovich for leaving the school district in a better position than he found it. "This district has traveled light years," she said.
Board member Robert Kuva said he has learned a lot about boardsmanship under Boskovich. "Not everyone could do the job that you've done here. Your background in finance ... You will be missed," he said.
Patrick Krull, a new board member who was sworn in Tuesday, along with Green-Fraley, said he has "crossed paths" with Boskovich in the past though he didn't have him as a teacher or coach. "I've always loved your professionalism," Krull said.
Jurczak told Boskovich she appreciated everything that he has done for the school corporation, and she is glad that he is not leaving tomorrow.
"I know how you feel about this district and it shows in your work," Jurczak said. "We will appoint a new superintendent but no one can replace you."
A 1969 graduate of Bishop Noll Institute, Boskovich began his career at the School Town of Highland in 1973 as an economics teacher at the high school. He taught there 14 years and was also head swim coach for eight years. He became assistant principal in 1973, serving a year at the junior high and three years at the high school.
In 1991, Boskovich moved to the central office as the technology coordinator and soon added director of transportation and buildings and grounds to his busy schedule. In 2005, Boskovich became business manager/assistant superintendent. Eight months later, he became the school district's interim superintendent. He has been superintendent for the School Town of Highland since 2007.
"I always felt comfortable here," he said at the end of the meeting, adding the town has a good community and a solid school district.
