CROWN POINT | A Lake County Criminal Court judge ordered a man accused of killing his pregnant girlfriend to be mentally evaluated.
Isiah L. Barker, 30, of Chicago, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to murder and feticide. Surrounded by deputies and correctional officers, Barker stood quietly in court.
He is accused of killing Cynthia Funches, 26, of Highland, who was 26 weeks pregnant when she was found dead June 22, 2011, in a storage bin inside a Chicago home, according to an affidavit. Barker later fled to Georgia where he was arrested in October 2013.
Barker previously said in court he wanted to represent himself. On Tuesday he was represented by public attorney Lemuel Stigler.
Prosecutors asked that Barker undergo competency evaluations after a doctor at the Lake County Jail recommended he see a psychiatrist.
Lake County Criminal Judge Samuel Cappas previously questioned Barker's mental state after Barker read a statement expressing skepticism of the government.
