Lions award scholarships

HIGHLAND | Scholarships were recently awarded to three students by the Highland Lions Club.

Highland Lions Club President Dennis Simala presented scholarships to Officer Anthony Kowal, Brenna Vernengo and Lindsey Kotynski.

Kowal is currently working as a Highland police officer while attending Calumet College of St. Joseph pursuing a bachelor's degree in public safety management. He is married and has one son.

Vernengo, a recent graduate of Highland High School,  is a freshman at IUPUI in Indianapolis, where she plans to major in nursing.

Kotynski recently graduated from Illiana Christian High School in Lansing and is enrolled at Purdue University in West Lafayette. She is pursuing a degree in elementary education.

"We hope area residents will support the Highland Lions Club in its biennial Candy Day collection, which will be held the weekend of Sept. 20-22 at the Highland Strack & Van Til's store," said Lions club member Tim Tintor.
