HIGHLAND | The Conquer Chiari Walk Across America is a series of coordinated awareness/fundraising walks being held across the country on the same day, including Highland.
Conquer Chiari, known formally as the C&S Patient Education Foundation, will hosts its local walk Sept. 21 at Wicker Memorial Park, 2000 Ridge Road. Registration begins at 10 a.m., and the walk begins at noon.
Everyone is invited to participate. The course length is a half mile to 5K, but participants are urged to walk at their own fitness level.
A minimum donation of $25 is suggested. Participants are asked to register online at www.conquerchiari.org. T-shirts will be provided to those who register by Friday and contribute at least $25. The walk is held to raise awareness of Chiari Malformation and to raise money for valuable research. All proceeds will fund research through Conquer Chiari. In 2012, the Conquer Chiari Walk Across America raised more than $535,000 with 80 percent of the money going directly to fund research.
Chiari Malformation is a neurological disorder where the brain descends out of the skull and puts pressure on the spine. It affects about 300,000 people all ages and races in the U.S., and causes severe headaches, neck pain, balance problems, weakness in the arms and legs, and respiratory problems.
Conquer Chiari is a 501(c)3 public charity dedicated to improving the experiences and outcomes of Chiari patients through education, awareness, and research.
