HIGHLAND | Felony charges are pending against two Chicago men who were arrested on Christmas Day in connection with an armed robbery in Burnham and an ensuing chase that ended in Highland.
Charges against Rakell Dushone Simmons and Joshua E. Bruce, both 20, are being presented to the Lake County prosecutor’s office, according to a news release issued by Highland police Cmdr. George Georgeff. The two men also are expected to face a multitude of charges currently pending in Illinois, the release states.
Carolyn Rogers, a spokeswoman for the Lake County prosecutor’s office, said Thursday that a probable cause affidavit against Simmons and Bruce had not yet been filed in Lake Criminal Court.
The chase began after the men robbed someone of cash, a wallet and a cellphone in the parking lot of International Foods, 14035 Torrence Ave., Burnham police said. The robbery victim pursued the men, who then fired shots at the robbery victim, Highland police said.
The chase ended in Highland when the men crashed the vehicle, which had been reported stolen, police said.
Several 911 calls about a possible road rage incident near Ridge Road and Osborne Street came in to the Highland Police Department about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said.
The men crashed the vehicle and fled on foot. A resident of the 8800 block of Osborne reported two men had just asked her to call them cab. However, the suspects fled the area and Griffith and Munster police helped Highland officers set up a perimeter.
A Highland officer and his K-9 tracked the men to a backyard in the 8900 block of Lawndale Avenue, where officers took Simmons and Bruce into custody, police said. A firearm was recovered, police said.
