HIGHLAND | A Warren Elementary School student brought an unloaded firearm to school Tuesday on an apparent dare, district Superintendent Michael Boskovich said.
School Town of Highland officials believe the child brought the gun after receiving a dare from another student, Boskovich said Wednesday.
It was discovered the student had the unloaded firearm while the child was on the bus heading home, he said.
Highland police immediately were notified and were dispatched to the student's home, Boskovich said.
Police located the firearm, and the student admitted to bringing the gun to school, the superintendent said.
An automated phone alert about the situation was sent to parents in the school district.
The school has taken disciplinary action, but Boskovich couldn't provide details about the discipline, he said.
The student isn't in attendance at Warren Elementary at this time, he said, and Boskovich wouldn't provide the student's grade or age, citing privacy concerns.
Highland police could not be immediately reached for comment on the matter Wednesday.
