HIGHLAND | The Town Council approved an economic development target area along Indianapolis Boulevard to accommodate a new Volkswagen dealership.
The site at 9545, 9553 and 9601 Indianapolis Blvd. is the current home of a Toyota dealer that is moving into a new facility in Schererville.
After the Toyota dealer moves, Volkswagen of Orland Park will modify the existing building and open for business.
The council also set an Oct. 8 public hearing for a 10-year tax abatement.
The dealership would pay about $257,000 in taxes over the 10 years, saving about $127,334, Redevelopment Director Petro said.
The Toyota dealer is somewhat behind in its move to Schererville, but Volkswagen hopes to break ground by early November and complete renovations by February or March, dealership President Joseph Hoobyar said.
"We're looking forward to becoming part of the community," he said.
Petro said the dealer will donate $20,802 to the town's economic development fund.
In other business, the council signed off on a letter of commendation for former police officer Ken Balon.
Balon, who currently serves as a civilian support services administrator for the department, did some investigating that led to the arrest of two juveniles involved with the graffiti vandalism of more than a dozen homes last month.
Also receiving letters of commendation were 21 officers who did not call off work from January through June and had no "at fault" traffic accidents during the same time period.
