HIGHLAND | An elderly woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Highland Tuesday after apparently suffering a medical problem, police said.
Mary Ann Gigac, 77, of Hammond, died at Munster Community Hospital in Munster as a result of blunt force trauma, according to a news release from the Lake County coroner's office. She was pronounced dead at 12:48 p.m.
Cmdr. George Georgeff of the Highland Police Department said the accident occurred at the intersection of Kennedy Avenue and LaPorte Street.
Police said Gigac was driving in the parking lot of the Highland post office when she started driving erratically.
"An elderly female appeared to have some type of medical condition that caused her to drive into traffic," Georgeff said.
Gigac then hit the corner of a building south of the post office and drove into the southbound lanes of Kennedy Avenue, police said. A large truck traveling on the southbound lanes hit the driver's side of the vehicle.
Officials extricated Gigac from the car and she was taken to Community Hospital in Munster where she was pronounced dead, police said.
There were no other reported injuries. It was unclear Tuesday what kind of medical condition Gigac had that led to the car crash.
