EAST CHICAGO | A Hobart man detained over a downtown shoplifting complaint Sunday also was wanted on a Lake County warrant, police said.

Officers were called to Strack & Van Til's in the 4700 block of Indianapolis Boulevard shortly before 6 p.m. by employees who said a man ran out of the store with merchandise he did not pay for.

Police reported spotting a man matching the suspect's description getting into a maroon sedan in the store's parking lot.

Richard Bombin III, 28, apologized for taking the merchandise, police said, and told officers it was all in the trunk of the car, which belonged to his brother.

Bombin was found to have an active December warrant out of Lake Superior Court for domestic battery, police said. -- By Steve Zabroski, Times Correspondent
