Alexis Miller, 8, was a first-place earner for the annual Lake County Public Library Foundation's 2010 Read-a-Thon.
Miller, the granddaughter of Tom and Ina Majka, of Hobart, and daughter of Tony Miller, also of Hobart, was one of 11 winners recognized at an awards breakfast held at The Patio Restaurant in Merrillville.
Children participated by seeking sponsors and reading as many books as possible during the six-week read-a-thon. Miller read 46 books and raised $105. She received a gift card for Borders Books and Music and a trophy that she proudly displays in the living room.
In the fall, Miller will be a third-grader at Meister Elementary School. She has been in the gifted and talented program since kindergarten and has never been late or missed a day of school. "I've never been so sick I couldn't go to school," she said. "If I don't feel good, my grandma fixes it. She takes good care of me."
Miller loves school and her favorite class is physical education. She likes playing dodge ball and often gets together with her friends after school to play the game, talk or play basketball.
She also enjoys being a cheerleader for the Hobart Pop Warner Football League. This will be Miller's third year on the squad and yet another opportunity to add to her medal collection. She recently received this year's new uniform and looks forward to practices that start in August.
Miller likes to swim, sing, and play with her cat, Smokey and dog, Suboo. She also likes helping out at home and in the community. When she grows up, she wants to be a nurse or doctor.
