HOBART | A 27-year-old Crown Point man forged checks not meant for him, police said.
Jeremy Jason Ingram was charged Tuesday with fraud on a financial institution and forgery through Lake Superior Court.
The grandson of a Hobart woman contacted police after she complained of her checking account being overdrawn, court documents state.
The incidents started after the grandmother had moved to Hobart from Crown Point and after new checks had been mailed to that address by her bank, court documents state.
Police Detective Steve Houck found that 17 checks had been cashed at various check-cashing places made payable to Jeremy Ingram bearing the Hobart woman's endorsement signature.
Ingram, when confronted by police, admitted he had moved into the home of the woman named on the checks after she moved to Hobart.
Ingram also admitted to forging the checks and cashing them without her permission, court documents state.
