HOBART | A 28-year-old Cedar Lake man stole copper from a Hobart business where he was employed and sold the items for profit, police said.
Gabriel R. Rodriguez was charged Tuesday in Lake County court with theft.
Police were called on May 3 by owners of Albert's Chimney Sweep, 5150 E. Lincoln Highway, in connection with the theft of several items.
Those items included stainless steel chimney liners and caps, several rolls of copper, copper piping and assorted tools valued at about $9,000, court documents state.
The business owner told police he believed Rodriquez, whom he was preparing to lay off, may have taken the items and sold them in the Highland area, court documents state.
Police received a tip and contacted Metro Recycling in Griffith. A manager confirmed Rodriquez had sold items there between Jan. 22 and May 2.
Hobart police Detective Sgt. Jeremy Ogden said the information provided by Metro Recycling was invaluable and helped prove the case.
