To those of you of Irish heritage and also those who just like to enjoy a bit of the blarney, I wish you a most enjoyable St. Patrick’s Day weekend and invite you to participate in one or more of the fun-filled events listed below. This week, it’s corned beef and cabbage dinners along with Lenten fish fries to entice your palette and raise funds for worthy causes.

Dinner and music

The Hobart Elks Lodge is having its St. Patrick’s Day event from 6 p.m. to midnight Friday.

The buffet dinner includes corned beef and cabbage, beef stew, chicken, boiled potatoes, carrots, along with salad bar and dessert for $18. Children 6 to 12 dine for $9 and those 5 and younger eat free. Dinner will be followed by entertainment, at no extra charge, featuring Harley Hehr.

Call (219) 942-1152 to reserve a table.

Fish and more

If you prefer fish, American Legion Post 454 is sponsoring its fish fry from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Fridays at 3139 Michigan St., New Chicago. Pollock, shrimp, chicken, and combination dinners are $7 to $9.

In honor of St. Patrick, a corned beef and cabbage meal will be held Saturday, beginning at noon until sold out, for $7.

K of C dinners

Hobart St. Thomas Council Knights of Columbus hosts Fish Fry Fridays from 4 to 7 p.m. through April 11 in the St. Bridget Parish Center, 107 Main St.

Cost ranges from $10 to $16 depending on entree and all dinners include choice of potato, salad bar, bread and coffee. Children 8 and younger may order fish for half price or choose from grilled cheese or mac and cheese served with fries for $5. Dessert and other refreshments also available and carry-outs are welcome.

Lenten services

The Rev. Dominic Bertino, pastor of St. Bridget Catholic Church, will be this week’s speaker as the Hobart Community Lenten Worship Services, "20 Minutes for God," continue from 12:05 to 12:25 p.m. Monday, followed by a soup lunch at 12:30, at First United Methodist Church, 654 E. Fourth St. (across from Maria Reiner Center).

All faiths are invited to worship together as we prepare our hearts for Easter.

Sweets and corned beef

Marine Corps Howlin Mad Ladies Auxiliary will hold a bake sale beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hobart American Legion Post 54, 208 S. Linda St.

Also Sunday, American Legion Post 54 will offer St. Patrick’s Day corned beef and cabbage dinners with boiled cabbage, carrots, potatoes, rye bread and butter, and coffee, dine-in or carry out, for $8 per person. Corned beef sandwiches will also be available for $5.

Proceeds will help underwrite attendance at Hoosier Girls State by highly qualified Hobart High School junior girls.

Kudos to thespians

This writer offers kudos to the Hobart High School thespians for their terrific performance of “The Diary of Ann Frank” last weekend. At the Sunday matinee, you could have heard a pin drop as the audience watched and listened spellbound to the familiar story.

Thanks to the actors and actresses and the entire supporting staff and teachers for the hard work that went into the outstanding production.
