HOBART | A Hobart pair stole a motorcycle, construction tools and a patio set from a house damaged by fire, police said.
Peggy Ann Maynard, 41, and Robert James Roberts, 19, were each charged in Lake County court with one count burglary and one count theft.
Two juveniles, who police declined to name, also were involved in the thefts and were charged in Lake Juvenile Court.
Police in early March were contacted by a man who owns a house in the 3300 block of West 38th Avenue that was damaged by a Dec. 24 fire.
The man said he hadn't been living in the house because of the damages but had gone there two to three times a day to check on it, court documents state.
In late February, the man started noticing things missing from his property, including a grill and some metal he used for concrete work, court documents state.
The man told police he went to his house March 7 and saw fresh tire tracks on his driveway along with fresh footprints in the snow going around his house and shed.
He discovered the doors to his shed had been opened and his 2000 Harley Davidson Sporter motorcycle was missing, along with $30,000 worth of construction tools, court documents state.
The man said he spoke to his neighbors, who told him they had seen individuals in a black Chevrolet Blazer on the property.
Police linked the thefts to Roberts and Maynard after identifying the Blazer as belonging to Roberts, court records state.
