HOBART | The Concerned Citizens of Hobart will hold a forum Sunday to talk about the possibility of plans to build an immigration detention center on property once owned by St. Sava Church.
Merrillville attorney John Bushemi in December confirmed the Florida-based GEO Group Inc. bought the land. Bushemi serves as local legal counsel for GEO, a company that builds and operates correctional and detention facilities around the world.
He has said the company has no immediate plans for land and no proposal has been submitted to Hobart for use of the property.
The forum from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Augustana Lutheran Church, 207 Kelly St., includes a brief presentation by Sandy O'Brien, of the Concerned Citizens, and attorney Fred Tsao, of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights.
Those attending will have the chance to submit questions, and petitions will be available.
