MERRILLVILLE | Three people in a car with an infant were arrested and a handgun was recovered Monday night after they fled from police and crashed on Interstate 65 south of Ridge Road, police said.
The pursuit began after Merrillville officers responded to the 3000 block of West 77th Avenue for a report of a drive-by shooting, Police Chief Joseph Petruch said.
When officers arrived, a blue Cadillac Eldorado fled the scene, he said. Officers began pursuing the car, which eventually entered northbound I-65, he said.
Merrillville police stopped chasing the car at 61st Avenue and later learned it had crashed south of Ridge Road, Petruch said.
Police don't believe any shots were fired, he said.
A preliminary investigation showed the suspects, two men and a woman, were involved in a dispute at a gas station and one of them displayed a weapon, he said.
Another person in the dispute went home and reported that shots had been fired, he said.
"Right now, we think these parties knew each other," Petruch said.
Police recovered a .22-caliber gun from the car, he said. Indiana State Police said about 9:30 p.m. that two right lanes of northbound I-65 were closed because of the crash.
