HOBART | A 23-year-old Gary man stole items out of cars in Hobart then attempted to sell them at a Merrillville shop, police said.
Willie Thomas Graves III was charged with five counts of theft and three counts of unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle through Lake Criminal Court.
Police officer Kevin Garber on Aug. 12 was called to Disc Replay, 1858 E. 80th Ave., in reference to thefts from several vehicles.
The theft victims told police items stolen from their cars included a laptop computer, a guitar and several DVDs and CDs. The total value of the items was $1,830.
Garber later was called to Rubino's Music, 8102 Georgia St., in Merrillville in reference to the stolen guitar being found.
Merrillville police had detained a man, identified as Graves, who had tried to sell the guitar.
Graves was arrested and his parked car, a black Hummer, was impounded and brought to the Hobart Police Department garage by Samson's Towing.
A check of the car by police indicated the vehicle and items inside it, including a GPS unit, were stolen, police said.
