HOBART | A suspect who allegedly fired a gun at Hobart police officers was in critical condition Friday morning after officers returned fire and struck him, police said.

Police said officers observed a shooting between the occupants of two vehicles late Thursday night in the 1600 block of E. 62nd Avenue near the Hobart/Merrillville border.

An officer saw a person in one of the vehicles had a gunshot wound. Officers went to investigate the other vehicle, which had driven off the road. When officers approached the vehicle, they were fired upon and returned fire, striking the suspect, they said.

Both of the gunshot victims were being treated for gunshot wounds early Friday and were listed in critical condition. The hospital where the pair were being treated was not released by police.

"A preliminary administrative review of the incident revealed no wrongdoing by officers," a press release issued by the Hobart Police Department said.

The shooting is being investigated by the Lake County Sheriff's Department, which is standard practice for officer-involved shootings.
