HOBART | A 26-year-old DeMotte man entered unlocked cars throughout town and stole coins, jewelry and other items, police said.
Matthew John Hanas was charged Thursday in Hobart City Court with four counts of conversion, one count of resisting law enforcement and four counts unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle.
Hobart police were patrolling the 800 and 900 block of Garfield on Dec. 12 because of a rash of break-ins when they saw someone get out of a pickup truck, court documents state.
The man, identified as Hanas, started to run and police stopped him, court documents state.
Hanas, who was carrying a backpack, told police he had entered a number of unlocked vehicles throughout the city and taken items, court documents state.
The items included coins, costume jewelry, cellphones, camouflage gloves, knives and a driver's license.
Anyone who suspects items were taken from their vehicle is asked to call police Detective Steve Houck at (219) 942-1125, ext. 1041.
