HOBART | A 32-year-old East Chicago man stole then pawned valuables from a former girlfriend's house in Hobart, police said.

John V. Lawson II was charged with theft through Lake County court.

Police on March 11 were called to a house in the 3700 block of Montgomery Street in reference to several thefts, court documents.

The resident told police she believed the items were taken from her house by Lawson, a former boyfriend, court documents state.

The items reported taken included a television, a DVD player, and a three-stone silver engagement ring.

Lawson later admitted to stealing and pawning the television and DVD player in Griffith, but denied stealing the engagement ring, court documents state.
