HOBART | A 25-year-old East Chicago woman allegedly stole from guests while working as a hotel housekeeper in Hobart, police said.

Margarita C. Vargas was charged with four counts of conversion through Lake Superior Court.

Police were contacted by a manager at Comfort Suites, 1344 E. 83rd Ave., regarding thefts at the hotel, court documents state.

The manager said he had fired an employee, Vargas, for stealing property from hotel rooms, court documents state.

Items that hotel guests reported taken included an iPod and a gun.

When questioned by police, Vargas admitted she took the iPod and gave it to a friend, court documents state.

Vargas said she took the gun because she needed it because she was being threatened by a man she used to date, court documents state.
