HOBART | A 26-year-old former Auntie Anne's employee took a customer's dropped debit card and used it to purchase a notebook computer, police said.

Carmeshia Whittington, of Gary, was charged Monday in Lake County court with theft, fraud and attempted fraud.

Police detectives were contacted April 21 by a woman who said she had her debit card stolen after she had purchased something from Auntie Anne's at Westfield Southlake Mall, court documents state.

The woman said she had contacted her bank and the debit card had been used at Walmart in Hobart for the purchase of an $800 notebook computer, court documents state.

Police contacted Whittington, who said she had worked at Auntie Anne's and had found a debit card on the ground which she used to make purchases at Walmart.

Whittington said she also used the debit card to purchase about $100 in groceries, court documents state.
