HOBART | The Hobart Middle School Brickies FLL (First Lego League) Team #2193 will be competing in its first ever robotics competition on Sunday, Nov. 23, at Indiana University Northwest.
The team of 10 members has been working on developing a robot, which will complete various missions on a 4’ x 8’ game table using their STEM skills (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). This year’s theme is Nature’s Fury.
Sample missions include triggering an airplane to fly across the playing board which will deliver supplies to the save zone, up-righting a hazard zone sign, raising a house to avoid flood water and delivering lost animals to people, just to name a few. Points are awarded for successful missions. Students have 2 ½ minutes to complete as many missions as possible.
In addition to building the robot, the students had to identify a real-world problem in a community. The students identified flooding is a problem and chose the City of Hobart as the community. In order to develop an innovative solution to the identified problem students did much brainstorming. The brainstormings lead the team to develop a prototype of the “Light for Life”. This is a lighting system similar to a traffic light. When water levels rise, the green light will turn to red advising drivers to not drive down the flooded road; hence saving life.
Another part of the competition in which the team can receive points is Core Values. The Core Values for FLL are: Inspiration, Teamwork, and Gracious Professionalism.
