HOBART | Building official Mike Hannigan had only good things to report about cleanup of an abandoned house at 1230 Fleming St. that was overrun by raccoons.
"There has been a lot of progress made since last month," Hannigan said.
He updated the board about the vacant house owned by Thomas Evans, who wasn't at the meeting.
Hannigan said work has been done on the grounds and the home's interior. Once cleanup has been completed, the owner plans to sell the property.
Board member Richard Lain said he understands there may be someone interested in buying the house.
"It looks promising; I'm very much impressed with the job being done," Lain said.
Evans was told by the board he must return Jan. 16 with an update, including a copy of a contract with an animal control company.
The house was overrun by raccoons that must be removed, Mayor Brian Snedecor said.
"The raccoons could become a safety hazard," Snedecor said.
The city has levied some $1,000 in fines against Evans that will be addressed at the next meeting, officials said.
Hannigan said the citations against the property go back more than a decade.
Board member Thomas Ehrhardt praised the cleanup Evans has accomplished during the last few weeks.
"He's been very active and very compliant," Ehrhardt said.
In other business, the board named Ehrhardt to serve as liaison to the Plan Commission for another year.
The board also approved conflict of interest disclosures from Snedecor, Clerk-Treasurer Deborah Longer and City Councilman Matt Claussen, D-at large.
