HOBART | A call center off 61st Avenue is adding 300 to 400 employees in the next 30 to 60 days, officials announced Wednesday.
Teleperformance Americall is accepting applications to fill full- and part-time positions, the majority of which are customer service/sales, said Scott Amo, Hobart site director.
Amo spoke about the jobs at a meeting attended by Hobart Mayor Brian Snedecor and Councilman Jerry Herzog, D-1st, and Lake County Commissioner Roosevelt Allen Jr., D-Gary.
"This is not only good for the city but good for the region, since this will provide jobs for the entire region," Snedecor said.
"We have a lot of people in the city of Gary who don't have jobs," he said.
Herzog, in whose district the call center is located, said the addition of so many new jobs is "exciting."
"The business keeps growing, and we applaud this," Herzog said.
The call center, 1901 Northwind Parkway, added 600 new jobs in August because of substantial business growth secured through existing clients, including CPP North America, Sears and Comcast, Amo said.
The recent call for up to 400 new employees is due to the company signing contracts with two new clients in health care fields.
Amo declined to provide the names of the two new clients.
The new employees will be hired at a starting salary of $10 per hour and will handle inbound customer service/sales calls, such as individuals needing information about health care.
In addition, the company is also hiring insurance agents starting at $13 per hour.
"This is a great opportunity, not only for the community but the company with the growth. We are in the process of refurbishing the office as well, which will be in a few phases over the next 60 days," Amo said.
Employees can opt to work a variety of shifts that are offered. The company's employees have included college students, veterans and retirees.

The company also is planning a recruiting fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Festival Park Community Center, 111 E. Old Ridge Road.
