HOBART | Two police officers rescued a dog from an apartment fire Sunday night, Fire Chief Brian Taylor said.

The fire was reported to officials at 7 p.m. after someone saw heavy smoke and fire coming from the first floor of a three-unit apartment complex at 317 Center St., Taylor said.

Renters of the second-floor apartment weren't home at the time of the fire, and the officers rescued a dog from the unit, Taylor said.

The first-floor unit and the third-floor unit were unoccupied, Taylor said.

The fire was confined to the living room of the first-floor apartment, where the blaze apparently started, he said.

Damage was estimated to be $5,000, and the cause of the fire remained under investigation Monday.
