HOBART | Crumbling, sinking roads in his district are a big concern for Councilman Pete Mendez, D-2nd.
So at a recent City Council meeting, Mendez handed Mayor Brian Snedecor a list of seven streets in his district that need emergency repairs.
"I know there may be streets in other districts in even worse condition," Mendez said.
Councilwoman Monica Wiley, D-at-large, offered similar complaints of streets badly in need of repair.
For Wiley, one of her priority streets is 70th Drive, which she said is sinking.
"I'm afraid it's going to cave in," Wiley said.
Snedecor told Mendez, Wiley and other council members to provide him with lists of streets that need repairs so that officials can prioritize them according to needs.
Snedecor offered little hope that all the streets could be fixed because of lack of funds.
"Our local roads and streets fund is in a negative balance," Snedecor said.
Money for repairs this spring will have to come out of the casino funds or be done in-house, Snedecor said.
The mayor said he'll try to handle the reparis internally so they don't have to be contracted out.
Mendez said the streets in his district that are in the worst condition include County Line Road from Indiana 130 to 37th Avenue, the east side of Rand Street and Union Street.
Mendez said Union Street has been a big problem since a water line was replaced there.
"It's definitely in need of repairs. You feel like your car will go off the bridge," Mendez said.
