The School City of Hobart Education Foundation and the Hobart Chamber of Commerce will present the 20th annual Outstanding Educators Awards at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the Hobart High School Board Room, 2211 E. Tenth St.

Teachers to be recognized are Trisha Carrillo and Jill Cruz from the Early Learning Center at George Earle School, Phyllis Nimetz and David Grabczak from Hobart Middle School, and Michael Black from Hobart High School.

To attend the dinner, which costs $10, contact the administration office at (219) 942-8885.

Business Expo and luncheon

The Hobart Chamber of Commerce is hosting its annual Business Expo on May 22 at County Line Orchard, 200 S. County Line Road, Hobart, with more than 60 vendors offering prizes, giveaways and free samples.

The public is invited to attend free from 4 to 6 p.m. with a donation to the Hobart Food Pantry or Hobart Humane Society; a minimum $2 donation per person is suggested.

If your business has not yet signed up or if you would like more information, contact Lisa Winstead at the chamber, (219) 942-5774 or visit www.hobartchamber.com.

In conjunction with the Expo, Hobart Mayor Brian Snedecor will give his “State of the City” address at a 1 p.m. luncheon to be held at County Line Orchard. Cost for luncheon is $20.

Volunteer to deliver

Meals on Wheels is looking for drivers available 1 or 2 days per month to deliver hot meals to Hobart senior citizens and homebound clients. Since 1977, Meals on Wheels has been “Providing Nutrition; Preserving Dignity.”

If interested, call Joan Vith, volunteer manager, at (219) 756-3663 or email joan@mealsonwheelsnwindiana.org.

Win a house

Discounted tickets for the House Raffle of Northwest Indiana are on sale for $125 until June 8 at the Hobart Family YMCA, 601 W. 40th Place. After that date, tickets will cost $150 each. Proceeds will benefit St. Jude House in Crown Point and local YMCAs. Tickets are also available at www.nwihouseraffle.org.

Making a plan

The City of Hobart is seeking public input as it prepares to update its Comprehensive Plan. A series of public meetings will be held at Hobart Community Center, 111 Old Ridge Road.

The first session, on Visioning, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. May 29.

For more information, contact Sergio Mendoza at (219) 942-7985. Future session dates and additional information is available at www.planhobart2025.org.

Navy band opens concert season

Did you enjoy the final concert of the season last September at Festival Park? If so, mark your calendar, because we will enjoy a repeat performance of “Liberty Call,” the U.S. Navy Band from Great Lakes Naval Base, as they open this year’s weekly Concerts in the Park series at 7 p.m. June 5. And if you missed the band last fall, get ready to join the crowd next month for the Thursday evening outdoor performance.

All nonprofit organizations are invited to email  information about their summer activities to lkolar1454@aol.com so they can be included in Hobart Happenings. Linda Mummery Kolarik is president of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 54 in Hobart. The opinions expressed are solely those of the writer.
