HOBART| High school senior Decari Hill has only good things to say about his Library Leadership Association experience this past year.
"They teach you responsibility; it's almost like having a job," Hill said.
Jesse Macias, one of the students who received special "star" recognition, said he also learned a lot by volunteering in Hobart High School's library.
"It teaches you career readiness," Macias said.
Hill and Macias, who serve as assistants in the school's library, were among the 16 assistants and interns honored at a luncheon Wednesday.
Media Assistant Coordinator Fran Hamilton said the students deserve the recognition.
"We have several wonderful students, and we want to give them recognition," Hamilton said.
Students, all juniors and seniors, were treated to pizza and cake in the media center. Each was given a certificate of acknowledgment.
Hobart Mayor Brian Snedecor was on hand along with school Superintendent Peggy Buffington and high school Principal David Spitzer.
Snedecor praised the students, who were singled out for leadership skills that go beyond their expected duties.
"This is a neat thing," Snedecor said. "The students serve as mentors and advocates for other students as well as resources and caretakers."
Macias said students are elected to pick electives during the school year, and he picked working in the library as his.
"I chose to work in the library because it's a quiet place to work and I knew it would be fun," Macias said.
