Happy New Year! The beginning of a new year is a time for dreams and plans. What will 2014 bring for you and your family? I wish you joy and peace, and for at least one of your dreams to come true this year.

U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky, D-Merrillville, is hosting Town Forums around the First Congressional District. He welcomes constituents at 10 a.m. Monday to Hobart City Hall, 414 Main St., where he will bring us up to date on issues in Washington, D.C. and take questions The meeting will be held in the City Council Chambers. Calendar is fundraiser

The Arc Northwest Indiana is offering its 13th annual fundraising calendar, which costs $25 to register and will award $25,750 in prize money.

A cash prize winner is drawn for each day. Stop in at The Arc East Center, 2395 W. Old Ridge Road, Hobart, to purchase in person or mail a check to the main office at 2650 W. 35th Ave., Gary, IN 46408.

Kiwanis needs sponsors

Hobart Kiwanis Club is seeking sponsors for its 16th annual Chili/Hot Dog Supper on Jan. 30 at Hobart’s Trinity Lutheran Church gym.

Profits support numerous children’s and community projects in Hobart and beyond. The club meets at 7:30 a.m. Wednesdays at the Paragon Restaurant, 1967 E. 37th Ave, Hobart, and anyone interested is welcome .

Brews in the Barn

Tickets are going fast for the Brews in the Barn fundraiser sponsored by the Hobart Family YMCA from 6:30 p.m. to midnight Jan. 25 at County Line Orchard, 200 N. County Line Road, Hobart.

This celebration of craft beer will offer live music and unlimited beer sampling for ticket holders. Proceeds go to the Hobart Family YMCA Changing Lives Campaign.

Tickets range from VIP at $75 to Designated Driver at $10. Visit www.brewsinthebarn.com.

Dispose of batteries

If you have used batteries to discard, drop them off at the Maria Reiner Senior Center, 705 E. 4th St., for proper disposal. Household batteries only, and no lead acid batteries will be accepted.

Bowling with EEU

Looking for some indoor exercise? Exceptional Equestrians Unlimited will hold a bowling fundraiser  Jan. 26 at Camelot Lanes, 5201 U.S. 6, Portage.

Registration is necessary. Cost for three games is $9 for adults and $7.50 for children 12 and younger. Shoe rental is an additional $2.50. Call Diane Wolfe at (219) 916-1713 to make reservations.

Soup & Salad

Gardeners think spring

Hobart Garden Club will have a booth and fundraiser at the Porter County Master Gardener Garden Show on Jan. 25 at the Porter County Fairgrounds, so stop by to dream of spring.
