HOBART | The Hobart Lions Club will host its 25th annual Steak Fry from 4 to 7 p.m. Ag. 16 at the Hobart Community Center in Festival Park, 111 E. Old Ridge Road.

The cost of a complete meal is $14, and includes a freshly-grilled rib-eye steak, tomatoes, potatoes, corn on the cob, dessert and beverage. Tickets are available from any Lions member or at the door. Call Sally or Clarence Davis for information at (219) 942-4433.

All monies raised are returned to help the community and for service projects for people in need. The Lions recently purchased a piece of equipment for the Hobart Fire Department, a small tanker that can put out brush fires in places where larger vehicles cannot gain access. This vehicle will be displayed at the Steak Fry.

Another project that the Hobart Lions Cub has undertaken is a fundraiser for 9-year-old Mikayla Sewell this Saturday in South Haven.

Mikayla has had eight surgeries and she's only 9 years old. The daughter of Stacy Hayes of Union Township and a third-grader at John Simatovich Elementary School was born with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome, which requires she be on a ventilator during sleep, during seizures and when she becomes ill.

This is a lifelong disorder. During her first surgery they found she has Hirschsprung's disease, which means the nerve cells in her colon were dead. She has also been diagnosed with bradycardia with dysrhythmia — slow and irregular heart beats.

Mikayla has a tracheostomy tube and a ventilator. The family hopes to get a BiPap machine, but with no backup battery for the new machine the family needs a whole house generator to keep her breathing if the electricity goes out.

Once she has the BiPap, she will lose her nursing hours funding and will need a service dog. All this takes  time, effort and money.

The Lions will be selling corn on the cob at Pepe's Mexican Restaurant, 809 McCool Road, South Haven during "Mikayla's Mission" summer benefit beginning at noon to 8 p.m.

There will be bands, DJ, beer garden, poker run, 50/50, silent auction, raffle, photo booth and vendor fair.
