HOBART | An 18-year-old man fleeing from police early Sunday died in a single-vehicle crash, the Lake County Sheriff's Department said.

Christopher Velasquez, of Hobart, died at the scene of the crash at Third Street and Crestwood Drive in Hobart, the Lake County coroner's office said. He died from blunt force trauma.

Patti Van Til, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff's Department, said Hobart police attempted to conduct a traffic stop about 3:30 a.m. near the intersection of Wisconsin Street and Cleveland Avenue.

Police said Velasquez kept driving his 2002 Nissan Altima for more than a mile. He crashed the vehicle into a tree, Van Til said.

Hobart police called the Sheriff's Department to conduct an investigation of the crash.
