HOBART | Hobart Mayor Brian Snedecor has narrowed a long list of potential police chief candidates down to three.

"I hope to name a new chief by the end of the week or by early next week," Snedecor said.

In the meantime, Lt. Vance Thompson will continue to serve as the interim police chief, Snedecor said.

"I still need more time. I don't want to rush it. The current administration is holding down the fort," Snedecor said.

Two of the three finalists are Hobart officers Lt. David Grissom and Sgt. Rick Zormier.

Snedecor declined to name the third candidate, a veteran police officer for the Gary Police Department.

"Right now I'm tying up some loose ends so I have a firm foundation of what I'm bringing to the table. All three could do the job," Snedecor said.

Thompson, who served as deputy chief of police, was named interim police chief Jan. 17 by Snedecor to replace former Police Chief Jeff White, who resigned Jan. 15.

Snedecor said he received resumes from 12 to 15 applicants interested in serving as Hobart's police chief.

Thompson was not one of the applicants and was not interested in interviewing for the job, Snedecor said.

Snedecor said he has hired a consultant to work with him during the selection process.

Snedecor has denied there was any disagreement between him and White that led to the resignation.

He called White's resignation a "mutual thing."

White, a 20-year Police Department veteran, was sworn in as the new police chief March 6.

White declined to comment on his resignation as chief.

White replaced former Police Chief David Evans, who stepped down Feb. 23, 2012, following an agreement between him and the mayor.

Evans had replaced former Police Chief Rod Gonzalez, who stepped down March 19, 2010, citing personal reasons.
