HOBART | Phil Gralik, 40, of Valparaiso, has been hired as the new city engineer, Mayor Brian Snedecor said.
Gralik started his job one week ago at a salary of $90,000, Snedecor said.
A Michigan City native, Gralik received his bachelor's degree in civil engineering at Rose Hulman Institute in Terre Haute.
Gralik last worked for the Indiana Department of Transportation as a district traffic engineer.
His other jobs included working for the city of Valparaiso as a deputy city engineer and for Marshall County as a county engineer, Gralik said.
Gralik and his wife, Lynn Gralik, are the parents of a son, Skylar, 21.
Lynn Gralik works for the city of Valparaiso in the human resources department.
The city will continue to keep as a consultant the engineering firm of Butler, Fairman & Seufert, Inc., Snedecor said.
Pete Kohut of that firm had served as city engineer; Jake Dammarell had served as assistant city engineer.
During his first week, Gralik said he's been busy reviewing site plans and learning the city's organization.
"We need to figure out my role and how it interacts and supports the other departments," Gralik said.
