HOBART | It's winter on the calendar, but the Hobart Parks Department is already looking ahead to spring.
"We're getting ready for the 2013 season, once the weather improves," Superintendent John Mitchell said.
Plans could include lighting up the Lake George lakefront and adding an Oktoberfest to the city's list of activities.
"We're already looking ahead. As soon as the last event is over in December, we're already working on events for the following year," Mitchell said.
He talked about other possible improvements and activities.
If the budget allows, the city would like to add decorative lighting along the lakefront such as at the gazebo and Clock Tower on Lake George.
Lakefront trees might also be spruced up for the holidays if money permits, he said.
"We've done a preliminary investigation on the costs and are waiting to get information back from the contractor," Mitchell said.
A new picnic shelter at Festival Park also is planned as well as bathroom improvements and a new volleyball court at Robinson Lake Park.
The city's community pool, off Wisconsin Street, also will be undergoing improvements this spring, Mitchell said.
Adding a handicap accessible lift will help the city meet its Americans With Disabilities Act requirements, Mitchell said.
Parks officials also are working closely with the Special Events Committee to plan activities for the year.
One of the new events planned is an Oktoberfest featuring craft beer makers, Mitchell said.
The city also is planning to add another day to the popular Clock Tower Model Boat Race.
