HOBART | Police Chief Rick Zormier said he has streamlined his administrative staff for better efficiency and to better serve the community.
"We have reduced bureaucracy in an attempt to work smarter with our resources while putting more officers in the field," Zormier said.
Zormier and Mayor Brian Snedecor held a joint news conference on Wednesday to announce the plan, which consists of two new deputy chiefs.
Capt. Paul Oliver, 36, will oversee patrol services and Capt. Garrett Ciszewski, 33, will oversee administrative services, including anything not under uniform patrol, Zormier said.
"These two gentlemen are well-respected by their peers and inspire others with their vigilant work ethic," Zormier said.
Zormier, 42, became Hobart's new police chief on March 1 following an announcement by Snedecor.
Snedecor said he had instructed Zormier to take his time selecting his new staff.
"He went through an exhaustive number of meetings with the rank and file to determine the best candidates. It's an exciting time for the police department," Snedecor said.
Oliver has served as patrol supervisor for seven years and a police officer for more than 15, Zormier said.
Oliver has a degree in public affairs and is a certified accident reconstructionist.
"Paul leads by example and gets the most of the officers by working alongside them," Zormier said.
Ciszewski has 12 years in law enforcement and has served in investigations for five years.
Ciszewski has bachelor's and master's degrees in criminal justice and serves as instructor in law enforcement.
"His strong, aggressive work ethic and self-initiative earned him the position in the detective bureau," Zormier said.
"Both, although intense about their work, share a lighter side to themselves that make them more personable and approachable," Zormier said.
The move means the addition of four more officers on the street, Zormier said.
