HOBART | The Police Department's second in command will serve as interim chief until a permanent replacement is named, Hobart Mayor Brian Snedecor said.

Lt. Vance Thompson, who serves as deputy chief of police, will temporarily replace former Police Chief Jeff White, who resigned Tuesday.

Snedecor said he already has posted the job internally and plans to make a decision within the next 30 days.

"And I will also accept applications from those outside the department," Snedecor said.

Snedecor has denied there was any disagreement between him and White that led to the resignation.

He called White's resignation a "mutual thing."

White, a 20-year Police Department veteran, was sworn in as the new police chief on March 6.

White, who declined to comment further on his resignation, will be moved into investigations after a brief vacation, Snedecor said.

White had moved up the ranks, serving the previous four years as deputy police chief under two prior chiefs.

White replaced former Police Chief David Evans, who stepped down Feb. 23 following an agreement between him and the mayor.

Evans had replaced former Chief Rod Gonzalez, who stepped down March 19, 2010, citing personal reasons.
