Hobart will mark Memorial Day at Doughboy Monument

Hobart Memorial Day services honoring veterans who gave their lives to our country will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Doughboy Monument, Seventh and Lincoln streets, led this year by the Hobart VFW Post. Veterans groups will place wreaths at the monument listing deceased war veterans.

Also, Friday May 31, 2013 at 5:00 p.m.  the monthly Remembrance Day at the Doughboy Monument will be held at 5 p.m. May 31, with prayers and the ringing of a bell as the name of each member of the U.S military service who gave their life this month is read aloud.

Last Saturday, U.S. flags were placed at each veteran's grave at Evergreen Park, with help from Cub Scout Pack 42. Thanks to the Hobart High School Jr. ROTC Unit, veterans' graves were decorated Monday with U.S. flags at Evergreen Memorial Park

Concert season to open

Hobart City Improvement Committee’s summer concert season will start May 30, with a 7 p.m. debut at Revelli Band Shell in Festival Park, 111 E. Old Ridge Road. The first concert will feature the Hobart Middle School Jazz Band, followed June 6 with Mary Beabout and songs of the 1940s to 1980s. Free massages will be offered by Accord. City Improvement Committee members will offer pop, popcorn and hot dogs for purchase.

Fishing Fair 

Friends of Robinson Lake will hold its fourth annual Family Fun Fishing event from 9 a.m. to noon June 1. The free event off Liverpool Road in Hobart includes dip netting, fish anatomy, water testing, and a limited number of rods and reels to borrow. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Market on the lake

Hobart's Summer Market on the Lake will take place from 3 to 8 p.m. every Thursday, June 6 through Sept. 26, in Festival Park, 111 E. Old Ridge Road.

There will be fresh fruit and vegetables grown locally, arts and crafts, fresh bread, and many other booths with food and other products.

Vendor applications and rules are available at www.cityofhobart.org or in the Special Events Office at 414 Main St., Hobart.

Art classes

Hobart Arts League, 3850 Howard St., Hobart, is offering Basic Beginning introduction to art classes from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Saturday. Some supplies are included.

Lean about diabetes aids

Millers Senior Living, 5911 Lute Road , Portage, will host a program on diabetes at 9:30 a.m. June 5. Mathew Schneider of Midwest Medical will introduce products available to help diabetics, such as special shoes. Register with Gwen Kiser at (219) 764-0628.
