HOBART | A 76-year-old Hobart homeowner and his wife were targets of scam artists who prey on the elderly, police said.
Three men, who knocked on the couple's door Thursday on the pretext of doing yard work, instead worked to divert their attention, police Detective James Gonzales said.
No money reportedly was stolen by the men, who were inside the couple's house and garage, police said.
The homeowner, who began feeling uncomfortable, grabbed his handgun from inside his garage, but was pushed down by one of the men who took it from him, Gonzales said. The gun was recovered on the couple's property, in the 1200 block of Decatur Street, Gonzales said.
The suspect, along with the two other men, fled in a dark blue older model Chrysler or Dodge minivan with tinted windows. The men spoke a foreign language the couple didn't recognize, Gonzales said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Gonzales at (219) 942-1125, ext. 1114.
