HOBART | The Indiana Writers’ Consortium will welcome current Indiana Poet Laureate and Lake County native Karen Kovacik as the keynote speaker at its fifth annual banquet at 6 p.m. today at Avalon Manor, 3550 E. U.S. 30.
Abuffet-style dinner will be followed by Kovacik’s address, “Falling through Time: Writing the Self into History,” that will appeal to poets and prose writers. Open mic participation will be allowed.

Kovacik was born in East Chicago and grew up in Highland. She is the author of four collections of poetry, most recently "Metropolis Burning." She is a professor of English at IUPUI, where she directs the creative writing program.
