Kindergartner Kelly Glassford reeled off a list of things she's thankful for as she fashioned a construction paper turkey.
"I'm thankful for my family, my two cats and my two dogs," Kelly said.
Fellow kindergartner Dillon Degnon chimed in: "I'm thankful for myself and food."
There was plenty of pre-turkey talk on Wednesday at the George Earle early learning center in Hobart and at Jane Ball Elementary School in Cedar Lake.
Kindergarten students at Jane Ball participated in a family project called "I'm Not a Turkey."
First-graders read books about the first Thanksgiving and read Thanksgiving poems, teacher Dawn Kepshire said.
Other activities this past week at the school included students making Indian headbands and construction paper turkeys.
Similar activities were held at the learning center in Hobart on Wednesday. Students participated in a variety of crafts and had a Thanksgiving feast.
Students decorated hats designating them to be either a Pilgrim or a Native American.
"We are teaching the kids to work together with each other like they did the first Thanksgiving" Principal Amy Turley said.
