HOBART | Ty Artherhults, the head boys cross country coach at Hobart High School, has been named the 2012 Ball State University Alumnus Boys Cross Country Coach of the Year, according to Kate Webber, director of alumni and student programs at the Ball State University Alumni Association. Artherhults was selected by a vote of other Ball State alumni head boys cross country coaches at Indiana high schools.
A 2002 graduate of Ball State, Artherhults led the Brickies to a 117-30 win-loss record this season. The Brickies were ECA Hokum Karem champions, Crown Point Invitational runner-up, Hammond Gavit Invitational runner-up, Lowell Invitational champions, New Prairie Invitational 5th place, AAA Division Hobart Invitational champions, NCC runner-up, Sectionals runner-up, Regionals runner-up, New Prairie Semi-State 4th place, and 19th place at the IHSAA state meet. The team had six All-Conference runners, four individual regional qualifiers, two individual semi-state qualifiers, one individual state qualifier, and one All-State IATCCC.
The first Ball State University Alumni Association Coach of the Year Award was given in 1957. However, in 1997 the awards program was expanded to include all ten boys and ten girls IHSAA-sanctioned sports. Alumni who received their bachelor’s degree from Ball State are eligible to receive the award. Awards are based on the voting of other Ball State alumni head coaches in their respective sports within the state of Indiana.
