HOBART | Maple Syrup Time will be held on the next two weekends at Deep River County Park, 9410 Old Lincoln Highway.
The free annual program will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday, and March 16 and 17.
Warm days and cold nights signal the trees to awaken from their long winter's nap and begin the flow of sap. This late winter phenomenon leads the maple sugar farmer to gather buckets, drills and spiles and head out to tap the trees.
Meet an interpreter in front of the Visitor Center for a short lesson on how trees are tapped and sap is collected, at 10 and 11 a.m., noon, 1, 2, and 3 p.m. Stroll to the sugar shack to witness the sap being turned into syrup in the wood-fired evaporator.
Visit with Voyageur-era volunteers as they make maple sugar over an open fire.
At Wood's Historic Grist Mill, the video "Maple Sugar Farmer" will be shown at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., 12:30, 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m., and watch volunteers making quilting blocks for the Quilt of Valor. Join them or take a kit home to make a block to donate.
Children can learn about maple syrup through games and puzzles.
In the Maple Tea Room, warm up with hot maple tea, coffee, or hot chocolate and view maple syrup exhibits.
